Mengurangi broadcast domain

Memudahkan mengontrol trafik jaringan

VLAN terbagi menjadi port based, mac address based, maupun protocol based. Yang sering digunakan adalah VLAN port based karena jenis VLAN ini mudah dikonfigurasi dan mudah untuk diimplementasikan.

Jadi, ada yang mau berdiskusi tentang VLAN? Mari kita berbagi.

Task of network administrator is to backup all network device configuration regularly. But sometimes we are too lazy because we must backup it manually . Of course, this is exhausting and bored activities. By making a few scripts on your router, these routines can be overlooked. Cisco router backup automatically will make your job easier.

Before starting this tutorial, you should check IOS first. Your IOS device must support archive and Kron command.

First Step

Of course you need to create FTP server first. I suggest you use filezilla. In addition to free, this tool is very easy to manage. you can download filezilla server here.

Second Step

I think all of you familiar create ftp server. Next step you should create your own username and password in filezilla server, and specify the folder where to be shared.

Suppose username is erik and password is erik also. And d: \ backup_cisco will be shared.Your IP addres is 192.168.10.104. Do not forget to give write authority on the username that you have created.

Picture 1. How to configure shared folders

Third Step

We go to the cisco router. I use the C1841 as an example. Let’s start.

Create archive

Router # conf t

Router (config) # ip ftp username erik

Router (config) # ip ftp password erik

Defines the username and password to log in to your FTP server.

Router (config) # archive

Log in to archive mode

Router (config-archive) # path ftp://192.168.10.104/

Go to the FTP directory

Router (config-archive) # write-memory

Configuration file was save to FTP Server

After the last line in the command executed, the file will be automatically saved when we execute t write-memory command or copy run start command.
Make a backup schedule

Schedule the backup configuration can be set, if every week or every month. That’s up to you all.

Next you create Kronor in cisco, working as cronjob in Linux

Router # conf t

Entering Global Configuration Mode

Router (config) # backup occurance Kroner at 11:30 Mon recurring

Backup policy to do every day 11:30 hours Wednesday.
Router (config-Kroner-occurance) # policy-list backup

Insert the backup policy to list in Kron.

The contents of the backup policy is:

Router (config) # policy-list Kroner backup

I make cronjob with the name of the backup policy

Router (config-Kroner-policy) # cli ip ftp username erik

Authentication FTP server username

Router (config-Kroner-policy) # cli ip ftp password erik

Authentication FTP server password

Router (config-Kroner-policy) # cli path ftp://192.168.10.104/

Navigate to the FTP destination directory

Router (config-Kroner-policy) # cli wr

Save the configuration file on the router

Router (config-Kroner-policy) # cli end

Back to Previledge Mode

Router (config-Kroner-policy) # wr

Saving to FTP server

If number -1 appear on your folder, means that the backup process works

Picture 2. Succes Backup

High Price of Cisco Network Equipment sometimes make us lazy to learn network. But since some products give us router simulator software that can make us easy learn network. I’ve tried two kind of router simulator, Packet Tracer and GNS3.

Packet Tracer

Packet tracer is good for CCNA router simulator. With that software, instructor and students can easily communicate in learning process. Students can create network topology, configure device, injects packet without without real device existence. But don’t worry, the physical view is good enough. It provides routers (C1800, C2600, C2800), switches, and host with representations of expansion interface and identifies the capabilities of each interface including cities, buildings, and multiple wiring technologies.

The Key Feature of this cisco router simulator is Simulation and Visualization mode so the students can control time interval, inner working data of transfer and Propagation of Data across network. The Activity Wizard also help users to set up scenario using text, a basic network topology and predefined packet. With Real Time Mode provides good alternatives way learning network before they facing real network equipment. In My opinion, this is good CCNA router simulator.

And for CCNP router simulator I prefer using GNS3 that gives more complete network studies. Let’s discuss

When you want to design LAN topology, you should consider this switch layer. Cisco switch layer or the others switch brand should pay attention about this. The hierarchical design model includes the following 3 layer switch:

Access Switch

It Provides switch that directly connected to user or workgroup. The main purpose of an access layer switch is to allow end user connect to network. This layer operates at Layer 2 switch. You can put non manageable switch in here. But Cisco Topology recommend catalyst 1900 series , catalyst 2960 series, catalyst 4000 series, catalyst 5000 series

Distribution Switch

It Provides policy based connectivity. The main purpose of this layer is to give boundary definition in which packet manipulation can take place. Broadcast domains are segmented in this layer with Access List can be configured with your own policy. This layer operates in Layer 2 and Layer 3 switch. The other functions of this layer are VLAN routing, security, and any media transition that need to be occur like fiber optics, UTP cable or STP cable. Cisco recommends catalyst 5000 series and catalyst 6000 series for this layer.

Core Switch

It Provides optimal data transport between sites. This layer also called backbone. You can put router here when you don’t have associated router module. Packet manipulation like Access List can make slow switching packet. Remember, Access List configuration was put on distribution switch. When you provide core infrastructure with redundant alternate paths gives stability to the network in the event of single device damage. Cisco recommends catalyst 6500 series, 8500 series, IGX 8400 series.

Factors such as need, cost, and performance should be considered before a choice is made. And it’s your job as a network administrator to calculate cost, network design which suitable for your place.

Have you ever heard Mikrotik ? Some of you maybe ever heard about it. For some of you that never hear about mikrotik routeror mikrotik routerboard, I will tell a little story about it.I’m very excited when I used this mikrotik routeros. Powerfull, one mikrotik routerboard has many function and also cheap less ! With that tools you can save a lot of money from your pocket. What is mikrotik can do for your network ?

First time I see it in Warnet (A little house which you can rent internet connection from it). When I talk to the admin, “What device that you use in this warnet ?”. “I use mikrotik” he said. He only use one PC as a to control 20 users. Hmm.. I feel curious and then I find information about it. What is mikrotik feature ? It can use as :

Bridge

Routing Protocol support : OSpF, BGP

Powerfull right ? You just need one PC with 2 LAN card put on it and Install Mikrotik OS inside. The best OS license (level 6) price is only Rp 2.000.000. Is it cheap enough right ?

For the configuration you can use Winbox for the easy. But if you like command prompt, you can also connect by command line terminal by telnet or ssh protocol.
